DREAM BOAT

DREAM BOAT se déroule dans un Centre communautaire du Centre-Sud de Montréal. À chacune de mes visites, j’y rencontre des gens à qui je demande de participer à mon projet. Aux personnes qui s’y prêtent, je remets une feuille de papier calque sur laquelle ils doivent inscrire un souhait, un désir qu’ils aimeraient voir se concrétiser.

Une tentative visant à légitimer le droit aux rêves en les autorisant à croire au possible.

La prochaine étape consiste à fabriquer un voilier avec cette même feuille. L’aspect le plus important de cette initiative réside dans le fait d’aborder des inconnus, pour la plupart marginalisés, et d’interagir avec eux. De créer les conditions pour que ces individus acceptent de passer de l’anonymat à la figure publique. Gagner leur confiance en les amenant à s’accepter suffisamment pour bien vouloir poser et surtout, pour s’engager à partager leur réalité aux regards de tous.

Par ce projet, je souhaite mettre sur pied une activité rassembleuse chez une partie de la population à qui on ne demande pas souvent de s’exprimer. Offrir une visibilité à ceux que l’exclusion s’efforce de rendre invisible. Aucun bateau ne sera déplié, mais le papier calque étant translucide, quelques mots apparaissent, çà et là, sur la surface du voilier permettant d’imaginer les aspirations de chacun.

Porteur d’espoir, le bateau évoque le voyage, la quête, le but à atteindre. Fait de papier, il nous rappelle la fragilité de la vie.

DREAMBOAT takes place at the Comité social Centre-Sud, a community centre in the Centre-Sud district of Montreal. On each of my visits I would meet people and ask them if they would like to take part in my project. To those interested, I would give tracing paper, on which they would write a wish, a desire to be fulfilled.

A pursuit aiming to legitamize the integrity of dreams by affirming the possible.

The next stage consists of making a paper boat from the paper.
The most important aspect of this activity resides in the act of approaching strangers, for the most part marginalized, and seeking their collaboration. To create the conditions in which these individuals are willing to discard anonymity for the public eye. To win their trust to the point that they are willing to pose for the camera and above all share their reality with the public conciousness.

For this project I wished to initiate an activity that could gather together a group of people rarely asked to express themselves. Offering visiblity to those whom exclusion has made invisible. Although none of the boats were unfolded, some words, here and there, were visible through the paper allowing the viewer to perhaps imagine the makers’ wishes.

Bearer of hope, the boat evokes the voyage, the quest, the destination attained. Made of paper, it reminds us of the fragility of life.
